“Businesses across the UK have been forced to pay an extra 10% on average for their gas and electricity because suppliers routinely add third-party broker commissions to their bills.”

What is a Business Energy Claim (BEC)?

A Business Energy Claim looks at whether you were overcharged for gas or electricity because of hidden broker commission added to your energy contract.

Many business owners use an energy broker to arrange their energy deal, trusting them to find a competitive rate. What isn’t always made clear is that some brokers earn commission by adding fees into the price you pay for energy.

It’s estimated that more than a million small businesses may have paid inflated energy prices over the past decade because these broker fees were secretly included in their bills.

What is a Business Energy Claim (BEC)?

    Actual cost of energy 18p/kWh

    Energy broker commission added 2p/kWh

Your bill shows 20p/kWh (paid to supplier)

Supplier pays 2p/kWh to energy broker

Here’s what an average claim can look like:

    Contract 1: Electricity

    Contract Length: 4 years
    Energy Broker Rate (Uplift): 2p/kWh
    Annual Consumption: 100,000 kWh
    Energy Broker Commission: £8,000

    Contract 2: Gas

    Contract Length: 5 years
    Energy Broker Rate (Uplift): 1.4p/kWh
    Annual Consumption: 130,000 kWh
    Energy Broker Commission: £9,100

    Total Combined Overpayment: £17,100*

    Have I been affected?

You may have been affected by business energy mis-selling if:

    • You used an energy broker to arrange your gas or electricity contract
    • You weren’t clearly told how the broker was paid, or how much they earned
    • You were told the broker’s service was “free” or paid for by the supplier
    • You didn’t receive a clear breakdown of fees or commission before signing
    • You felt pressured to sign quickly to secure a deal
    • Your energy costs seemed higher than expected, even when market prices fell
    • You’ve used a broker at any point in the past, not just recently
